“When we interact with a child, we redefine their potential.”
Dr. Serena Wieder, co-developer of DIR®, Director of the DIR® Institute and
Soaring Eagle Academy Honorary Board Member |
What is DIR®? |
A Developmental Individual-Difference Relationship based methodology developed over 20 years by Stanley Greenspan, M.D. and Serena Wieder, Ph.D. DIR® offers us a new look at children with Autism, as individuals with great potential for interacting, communicating and thinking. |
D |
Developmental level refers to a sequence of milestones that a child moves through as they develop the ability to remain calm, attentive, focused and engaged for communicating, problem solving, thinking and learning.
Why? Building a developmental foundation supports each child’s potential for healthy emotional and intellectual growth. |
I |
Individual differences describe how each child takes in and processes sensory information in their environment, through their eyes, ears, muscles and body as they move through their day.
Why? Each person has a unique way of taking in and responding to the world. Individuals with Autism are no different except their individual differences and processing issues interfere with their ability to develop and learn. |
R |
Relationships with both peers and adults are the foundation for creating interaction and learning.
Why? As human beings, our brains are wired to relate to others and form relationships. Individuals with Autism are no different, so all learning must be in the midst of interaction and relationships. |
|
Focuses on the whole child
- Empowers parents with hope for a bright future and strategies for understanding and interacting with their child
- Supports each child’s emotional development as the key to growth of their mind and brain
- Believes that children with Autism are able to love and have friendships, understand and express emotions and communicate and think creatively and abstractly
